There are some things you need to understand about organic foods in order to make your purchases worth while. You need to know that since preservatives aren’t used on them they are going to rot faster. Therefore you only want to buy what you will be using within the next few days. It can be inconvenient to go to the store so often for fresh produce but you certainly don’t want to pay for foods that spoil before you get to enjoy them either.
Learn what types of fruits and vegetables are in season in your area. That way you can buy them when they offer the very best quality. You will also pay less for them when they are locally grown then when they have had to be shipped in from someplace else due to the different growing seasons. To help with your food budget adjust your menu so that you include as many as you can that are in season right now.
Pay very close attention to the labeling system for organic foods. Ideally, you should be looking for those that are 100% organic. That means nothing that isn’t organic in nature has been used to grow or harvest them. However, such strict requirements can be very difficult to meet which is why you will find lots of organic products out there with 95% organic materials used. Make sure you check into what that other 5% is though – it could be something that you definitely don’t want to take into your body.
It really doesn’t do you much good to buy products that are only 70% organic in nature. That other 30% isn’t anything you want to take into your body. However, the flip side to that is it is better than buying products that are traditionally grown. Those will have more than 30% of the ingrained not from organic means. On that same subject, labels that say natural foods aren’t the same as organic foods. Don’t correlate the two of them in your mind.
Before you consume any organic foods you need to wash them with warm water, use a gentle brush on them, and dry off with a paper towel. Many people assume that since chemicals aren’t used for them that they don’t need to be washed. However, bacteria can grow on them and there can be dirt remaining from when they were harvested. You don’t want to take any chances that these things remain on foods you are going to eat or feed to your family.
If you aren’t sure if you will like a specific type of organic food ask for a sample of it. Some grocery stores will do this if you ask but they normally don’t advertise it. You can definitely get such personalized service offered from farm markets because they want to see their customers be very happy.
Shop around for great deals on organic foods too. You may find that one location is having a great sale this week and then another place has one the following with. That is going to reduce the amount of money you pay for fresh fruits and vegetables and that means more money in you own pocket.
Don’t forget that organic foods also covers dairy products, eggs, and meats. Find out where you can buy those types of organic foods as well. That way you can drastically reduce the intake of toxins for your family. You will still love the great taste of your foods but without all those elements that your body doesn’t need.
